Lili, directed by Alicia Keys and written by Jill Gordon, follows Lili, a fiercely independent, career-minded woman (Rosario Dawson), who recruits her sister (Tracee Ellis Ross) to help tell their hard-nosed mother (Jenifer Lewis) that she has breast cancer. As they work through their past issues, Lili’s mother and sister ultimately become her strongest allies when she needs her family the most. Lili also stars Jeffrey Tambor as a male patient diagnosed with breast cancer.

Directed by Jennifer Aniston, written by Wendy West and told in a series of humorous and dramatic flashbacks, Mia is a survivor’s tale that highlights all of the highs and lows of Mia’s (Patricia Clarkson) two-year journey from diagnosis with breast cancer. During this time, she gives away all of her worldly possessions, holds a hilarious mock funeral while still alive and enters into a second marriage to Mitch (Tony Shalhoub), the new love of her life. Mia also features Kathy Najimy as Mia’s friend Rocky.

In Pearl, directed by Patty Jenkins and written by Deirdre O’Connor, Pearl (Jeanne Tripplehorn), the successful oncologist we have followed from childhood, suddenly finds herself in the patient’s seat when she is diagnosed with breast cancer. Through this process, she finally understands what her parents experienced that night in 1969 and finds the strength to tell her young daughter that everything is going to be OK … something she never heard as a child. Resha D’Ann was the second angelic blessing from God born October 28, 1974 to William Charles Benson, Sr. and Lauren Yoni Benson. She established her relationship with Christ at age four and maintained a membership with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She attended Galveston ISD where she excelled in academics and basketball. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Communications with a concentration in Interpersonal Communications from Texas Southern University. After receiving her teaching certification she began her career with La Marque Middle School as an educator specializing in English.

She was preceded in death by her father; brother, Rodney; grandparents, William & Thelma Benson, Norvell Phillips, and John Mavis.

Resha’s circle of love includes her husband, Thomas Duane Olivier: sons: Keawe Owens and Jordan Olivier: stepchildren, J’Laine, Aspen and Austin; mother and best friend, Lauren Yoni Benson; siblings, William Charles Tre’ Benson, Jr. (Daphne), Kerry Jackson, Jr., and Tanya Landry (Kentrick); grandmother, Gertie Mae Mavis; aunts, Susan Shepherd, Carolyn Anderson, Kim Norva Phillips, Katherine Rogers, Jacqueline Mitchell, Evelyn Conley, Florence Benson, and Constance Saldana; uncles, Steven and Eric Mavis, Donny, Ronnie, Elonzo, Michael, Renard and Raynard Benson; in-laws, Yvette, Darryl and Marcia Olivier; godmother, Vanessa D’Anne Hearne; best friends, Viola Darden and Shanan Jones, and so many wonderful cousins and friends, with which she shared life.

A Ceremony of Burial will be immediately following at Hayes Grace Memorial Cemetery, Hitchcock, Texas.

On Sunday, July 18, 2010, the I W.A.N.T. Foundation, Inc. hosted their second annual “Healthy Attitudes Towards Surviving (H.A.T.S.)” fundraising Luncheon at the Intercontinental Hotel in Houston, TX. The emcee for the event was comedian Marcus Wiley of the Yolanda Adams Morning Radio show. The guest speaker was breast cancer survivor Stephanie Lee. Cynthia Garcia and Ashlea Guillory provided entertainment. There was also a Hat Fashion Show, raffle and vendors. Over 150 men and “hat-adorning-women” attended the event. The event was spiritual, uplifting, and emotional and raised funds for a worthwhile cause.

In conjunction with the Philadelphia Motorcycle Show, professional motorcycle racer Peggy Llewellyn will lead a bevy of 50 to 100 other riders on a motorcycle ride from New Jersey to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks this weekend to promote the nonprofit organization Divas for a Cure.

With the Keystone State ranking fourth in the nation for new motorcycles sold and home to 800,000 registered riders, David Mockus believes it’s about time to end the several-year hiatus and bring a show to the bikers.

“For the past few years they’ve had shows in New York and Washington, D.C., but none here,” the show’s producer said.

After a few bumps in the road during previous shows, Philadelphia was taken off the map. Mockus left his job and created D&D Expositions with his mother to bring one back

“During previous shows, thousands of people came out,” he said. “We know there is an interest.”

To kick off what he is hoping will be an annual event, Mockus is bringing in some unlikely riders. Wearing a leather jacket and high heels, professional motorcycle racer Peggy Llewellyn and 50 to 100 other divas will ride from New Jersey to the Greater Philadelphia Expo at Oaks to promote the nonprofit organization Divas for a Cure.

“It’s not every day that you see women on bikes in heels,” she said with a laugh. “But if we’re called divas, I am going to make sure I look like one.”

The nonprofit organization is dedicated to “promoting early detection, education, screenings and supporting research organizations to continue the quest to one day find a cure and eradicate cancer of all kinds,” its Web site said. Proceeds from rides go toward educational material, health fairs, wigs for women undergoing chemotherapy, as well as mobile breast exams, according to the site.

Recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Llewellyn said the opportunity to combine her passion for riding and her goal of spreading awareness to her community was something she couldn’t pass up.

“I live by the rule that knowledge is power and the numbers show that breast cancer affects a large percentage of the Hispanic and black communities,” she said. She said that as a woman of Jamaican and Mexican descent, the cause is close to her heart.

“If women know about early detection, they can protect themselves,” she said. “If they have the information, they won’t become the statistic.”

Even though she’s dolling up for the event, Llewellyn said once she’s done the ride, she can kick off her heels and tell the estimated 10,000 bike lovers what it’s like to go 190 mph around a track.

The divas will also stick around to talk to convention-goers and sign autographs.

After welcoming the women, thousands of bikes will be set up in the center’s three halls, which are set to host the largest collection of motorcycles, ATVs and power sports vehicles in the area in years.

“There will be all different types of bikes,” Mockus said, adding that anyone can register their bike.

With numerous categories including antique and best in show, those who register their motorcycles will have the opportunity to receive cash prizes.

After perusing the bikes, people can make their way over to the rod and customs carnival.

The carnival will feature an auto-rama of select old school, hot rod, Rat Rod, Kustom and specialty show cars and bikes from around the tri-state area and, according to the press release, the event is all about “fun, kool cars and wild ideas.”

Amazing oddities including rubber girls, a two-headed duck, a Fiji mermaid, mummies and shrunken heads are also sure to draw a crowd, Mockus promised.

Professional BMX stunt bicyclists by Dialed Action Sports Team will wow and shock audiences with their death-defying feats, and booths featuring local tattoo artists and custom-made bikes will also be at the show.

Parts and products will be sold for those who are hoping to start, or finish, their own bike project.

The event will also include a toy run for St. Christopher’s Hospital. All show-goers are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy with them to receive $3 off admission on Sunday.

Saturday night will be a special treat, with Biker Brawl’s presentation of R.I.E’s Mixed Martial Arts at 8 p.m. There is a separate admission and the cost is discounted for motorcycle show attendees.

“The fights are always broadcast, and when you watch, there is a huge Harley-Davidson ad in the middle of the ring,” Mockus said. “They are a huge sponsor of the event so we thought the combination fit.”

With the weekend full of exciting activities, Mockus said the convention center will definitely be revving with things to do.

“It hasn’t been here in so many years,” he said. “It’s definitely going to be exciting.”

Breast cancer has affected families across the country, and Gloucester County is no exception.

Although the disease never discriminates and is one of the leading causes of death in women, the founder of Divas for the Cure said minority groups are still less educated about their risks, treatments and the importance of early detection of breast lumps.

“I think a lot of minorities think this is a white, female disease only, which is far from the truth,” said Jan Emanuel-Costley of Browns Mills, who started Divas for a Cure after surviving breast and other types of cancers.

According to Costley, more white women are diagnosed with breast cancer, but more minorities will die from the disease.

“The white community has more access to health care, higher income, and are better educated,” she said. “All of those factors contribute to people being proactive. I think, if you know better, you do better.”

Costley said for some families under financial strain, paying for health care costs often comes in last, well after utilities, rent and mortgages bills are paid.

“My first bout with cancer was at age 16,” Costley said. “If I hadn’t had the proper follow-up and treatment, I wouldn’t be 48.”

To raise awareness of breast cancer, early detection and treatment options, Costley will lead a motorcade on Oct. 10, from Barb’s Harley-Davidson in Haddon Township to the Philadelphia Motorcycle show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa.

“When we ride our motorcycles, people pay particular attention to a woman riding a bike,” said Costley, who has more than 100,000 miles of motorcycle riding under her belt. “Once I get your attention, I’ll talk to you. And once I talk to you, I leave you with a breast cancer brochure.”

Costley hopes several hundred riders will join the 40-mile trek to raise breast cancer awareness.

“We have to dispel those myths and educate women and say, ‘just like getting a cavity checked. A lot of people wait until they get a cavity to see the dentist,’” said Costley, adding that 95 percent of breast cancer cases are completely curable if detected at early stages. “A cavity is fillable. With breast cancer, you lose your life.”

The Philadelphia Motorcycle Show will host the “Revved Up for the Cause” motorcycle run on Oct. 10. The run will leave Barb’s Harley-Davidson & Buell at 926 Black Horse Pike in Haddon Township at noon and ride to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks in Oaks, Pa.

The run will benefit Divas for a Cure.

Barbara Padilla... A Cancer Survivor!

This season's America's got talent features a fabulous vocalist, who happens to be cancer survivor. Her name is Barbara Padilla.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Barbara Padilla made her way to Houston for treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy at the center. During this time, it was feared she might not sing again.

She put to rest any doubts that her musical career was in jeopardy after a successful audition with University of Houston. She earned a scholarship and began a challenging, yet inspiring, artistic journey at U of H.

"I was sick for five years, and now, I'm in remission," she said following her performance. "And now, I'm here. What a dream! When you have hope, you keep going."

Harley-Davidson Revs Up for Bikers Roundup

Thousands of motorcyclists will rumble into the Atlanta Motor Speedway from August 4 – 9 for what is known as one of the largest motorcycle camping rallies in the country. Nearly 15,000 African American motorcyclists will make their way to the 32nd Annual National Bikers Roundup to reconnect and commune with fellow motorcyclists for six days of musical entertainment, drag racing, and more.

"Harley-Davidson is honored to be a part of this historical event and celebrate the rich history of African American motorcyclists," said John Comissiong, director of market outreach for Harley-Davidson. "We are proud to support National Bikers Roundup for 12 years now and we believe this event continues to build our relationship with diverse customers."

Many of you know that I finished my last radiation treatment this past Wednesday. Hallelujah! I would not have done as well as I did without the grace of God, and without all my friends and family.

I wanted to share some pictures with you of a tradition at MD Anderson. Each time a patience completes a milestone, such as completing chemo or radiation, they get to ring the bell there is the area of treatment. The bells are donated from prior patient's. I can tell you, and Alma will back me up, it is a BIG DEAL when the opportunity comes!Other patient's, family, friends, technicians, nurses, and sometimes the doctors participate.

My pictures include the two technicians that gave me the radiation treatments for the 6 weeks, and also my sister Sarah. It was a truly great day for me!

Fawcett left the show after only one season, and, after a string of big-screen flops, finally earned critical praise in the mid '80s with the off-Broadway play Extremities and the NBC movie The Burning Bed. (Her role, as an abused wife, earned the actress her first Emmy nomination.)

In 1985, Fawcett -- divorced from Six Million Dollar Man Lee Majors -- struck up her romance with O’Neal, and the two had a son, Redmond James O’Neal. Throughout the next decade, she attracted plenty of critical praise for her on camera work, including 1997’s The Apostle and 2000’s Dr. T and the Women. But she also engaged in her share of public foibles -- a naked-body-painting layout in a 1995 Playboy, a famously addled appearance on David Letterman’s Late Show in 1997. She even tried to tell her own story in 2005 with the short-lived TV Land reality series Chasing Farrah, to roundly dismissive reviews.

In 2006, Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer. After undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, the actress was cancer-free. Unfortunately, doctors found the disease had returned in 2007. Even as her treatment resumed -- and family's drug battles continued to make headlines -- Fawcett managed to maintain an upbeat outlook. As Alana Stewart, friend and co-producer of Farrah's Story, told EW.com in April, "She’s always been positive. Her spirits have always been good throughout this ordeal."

ALLENSWORTH — Rarely can Harley-Davidson and Allensworth be used together in the same sentence.

The opportunity presented itself, however, during a three-day event Thursday, Friday and Saturday as thousands of motorcyclists converged on Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park for the second annual West Coast Bikers Round-Up.

The event — which attracted riders from Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington — was sponsored by Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Sinister Wheels.

The entrance fee was $25. Children ages 10 and under were admitted for free.

All of the proceeds will go toward bone marrow research, West Coast Bikers Round-Up Association treasurer Deryk Howard said.

“We’re just trying to do a good thing,” he said.

Last year’s event, according to Howard, drew roughly 3,000 riders and raised $105,000.

“Next year’s going to be even better,” he said. “It’s starting to catch on.”

Showing its support by attending the rally was Divas For A Cure, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising cancer awareness through early detection, education, screenings and research.

DFAC founder and president Jan Emanuel is a three-time breast cancer survivor.

Her organization has raised over the past three years $110,000, all of which was injected into the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center fund.

“Passion should have a purpose,” Emanuel said. “Why not do something good for someone and have fun doing it.

“The quicker we do something about it, the quicker we’ll find a cure.”

Activities galore kept attendees constantly entertained Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

A bike race, bike show, stunt show, talent show, water slide, movie night, camping, raffles and music — among many more attractions — greeted bikers and children alike.

“It wasn’t something we had to come to,” Stan Jones, president of riding group Rising Sons, Bakersfield chapter, said. “We wanted to come.”

Broken Swords president Alex Shinal agreed.

“It’s wonderful,” he said. “So far I’ve been around to all of the different clubs. It’s really nice.”

Howard said he was hopeful 70 to 80 clubs would make an appearance in Allensworth.

He also said he wants to increase the size and popularity of the event by reaching out to East Coast riders.
“If we build it,” Howard said, “hopefully they will come.”

They call themselves “Divas For A Cure,” but their work is far from glamorous. Jan Emanuel-Costley, founder and president of the California-based nonprofit organization, and a band of biker buddies are helping fund breast cancer research at M. D. Anderson through cross-country motorcycle rides, with the support of corporate sponsor Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

Last summer’s third annual Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run found Emanuel- Costley and 2008 DFAC core group riders enduring the elements on an 18-day, 6,014-mile journey. Emanuel-Costley and fellow divas Michelle Hampton, Elaine Thomas, Cynthia Marcy and Aj Coffee, DFAC vice president and ride coordinator, biked from Atlanta to
Canada to the East Coast and back, collectively raising $35,000 through registrations, sales of ‘Divas’ Rev Up Breast Cancer Awareness “Real Divas Ride” patches, sponsorships and donations.

On Saturday, October 25, 2008, Divas For A Cure accompanied by the NJ Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Family, Friends & DFAC Supporters presented a check to Bill Alexander of M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center for $35,000.00 at the Harley-Davidson of Ocean County dealership in Lakewood, NJ.

The proceeds from this years' run will be dedicated solely to Breast Cancer Research. This is a small token but a big commitment in the huge struggle for many of us who continue to be plagued with health issues as a result of the fight. Cancer does not discriminate - - but we have made many strives and many of us are still here as a result of the advances and developments of new technology, treatments and medicines developed from research. Countless lives will be saved also as a result of early detection. Elaine Thomas "Hunter" a member of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Poconos Chapter said it best, "We want a cure in our lifetime!"

This past weekend family and friends of Patti Cauthen participated in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" in Houston, TX. Patti was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will be undergoing treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston.

In honor of his mother, Clayton Cauthen, organized a group of walkers that included friends and family and raised more than $1,200.00 for this honorable cause.

Patti's co-workers and friends showed their support on Friday, October 10th, by all wearing their "Patti Preventers " t-shirts to work at United Space Alliance at the Johnson Space Center.

Well, if you still think that the Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run is a fun filled adventure and guided tour across the United States - - you are sadly mistaken and will be greatly disappointed. Nor is it a marathon shopping tour with leisure riding, overnight stays at bed and breakfast inns, hotels and spas with a few women and men who don’t have day jobs. It is an intense 22-day fundraising campaign where the riders volunteer their time to participate and pay their own way. A true non-profit event.

Divas For A Cure “DFAC” is not a motorcycle Club. DFAC is a non-profit public benefit corporation. The DFAC Signature Event is an organized Breast Cancer Run established in 2005 to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, Early Detection and to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.

The Annual Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run is an AMA sanctioned and insured event. The Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run is not a Buffalo Soldier Motorcycle Club Event but is supported by the volunteer participation of many of the members of various chapters along the route each year. This event is underwritten by various corporate sponsors and officially escorted by designated members of the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers and Troopers Motorcycle Club who volunteer their time and talent to help support the cause. All Pick-Up Riders and Escorts must pay a $35.00 Rider Registration Fee and also sign the AMA/DFAC Waiver & Release.

The DFAC Route and Meet & Greet Schedules are pre-determined and marketed to the general public and corporate sponsors 6-8 months prior to departing. The Route schedule is determined based on sponsored stops (Meet & Greets and Media Appearances). Daily departure times and riding schedule will fluctuate and will be based on distance, road/traffic, weather and riding conditions. An average riding day is generally 8 hours (which includes breakfast and/or lunch and brief fuel and rest stops). Meet & Greet stops average 2-1/2 hours per sponsored stop.

The Annual Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run is just one of many events throughout the year that help to continue the mission and served the community. The 8 month planning process is managed by the Jan Emanuel-Costley (Founder & President and DFAC Spokesperson) and Aj Coffee (Vice-President & Logistics Coordinator) along with various other volunteers who donate their time and talent to soliciting corporate sponsorship, rider participation, email marketing, website maintenance and corresponding to various email communications.

Much of the DFAC Operating & Administrative Costs are funded through corporate sponsorship and primarily through the sales of DFAC Lapel Pens, Patches and other Breast Cancer Merchandise throughout the year.

There are no paid salaries. Everyone is a volunteer (Board of Directors, Founder & President, Riders, and other Participants). All of the Riders/Participants are required to pay their own way to participate in the Annual Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run.

Each year, I personally fund and donate my time and talent and the use of my SUV and Trailer, as well as also pay my own personal expenses to participate in the DFAC event.

In hindsight, I have no regrets for my commitment to Divas For A Cure. I understand that as the Founder & President of Divas For A Cure - I am ultimately responsible for all aspects of the organization. I accept the challenges that comes with being a leader as well as the financial, legal and fiduciary responsibility that comes with managing a non-profit organization.

I also realize that at the end of the day when all is said and done there will always be a few who will criticize you and some who will applaud your efforts. Therefore, it is with that knowledge that I remain focused on the mission “Breast Cancer Awareness, Promoting Early Detection and Raising Funds for Breast Cancer Research.”

There will always be ups and downs to any grassroots organization – so I will continue to count it all JOY! Hi Ladies, I was on my way home form work today and saw you on I-40 east heading into Raleigh, NC around 5:15pm. What a sight to see plus what an organization to find out about. I have never heard of you and decided to look up your web site when I logged on. I tried to toot my horn and give the thumbs-up to you but traffic was backing up and I could not get close. My mother who is an amazing lady has survived not one but two cancers. In 1980 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and championed her way through the ordeal. Three years ago in 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent an elective double mastectomy. Not to forget that 3 years prior to her diagnosis with breast cancer, my sister was also diagnosed with the disease and had a double mastectomy. Thankfully with testing I have been cleared by my doctor from carrying the gene...I guess we will see huh? But seeing you ride through town gave me chills in a happy way and made me realize the you are a hero to someone in your lives like my mom is my hero in my life. My mom however does not ride a "bike" and currently does not work due to being simply beat down by cancer. But she keeps on going and making her way through life. She can no longer work and is retired and is taking care of her husband who is also retired but is now suffering from strokes. So it was really great seeing strong and determined ladies making a difference by bringing awareness and raising funds to support research which sadly is not funded by our government. Good luck on your journey and be safe while riding the highways of our great country.

I am a big advocate for cancer (esp. colon cancer b/c my first husband died 6 years ago at the age of 35 with colon cancer). I am studying to become a breast cancer certified oncology nurse for the Spring 2009----thought this was awesome when I saw it on the road today and came home to look up the website that I saw on the trailor following the women!!!! STONYCREEK TOWNSHIP — More than 200 motorcycles roared to the Flight 93 temporary memorial Thursday.

The National Association of Buffalo Soldiers and Troopers Motorcycle Club formed a line about a mile long when they traveled from Seven Springs to the memorial to pay tribute to the heroes of Flight 93. The majority of the members, who represent chapters from across the United States, visited the site for the first time Thursday, club founder Ken Thomas said.

“For a lot of us, this is our first time visiting Pennsylvania,” he said.

The group marched down to the site in formation and presented a wreath.

Barbara Black, memorial archivist, said the National Park Service was privileged and proud the group visited the memorial.

“The Buffalo Soldiers have been lovers of freedom and bravery and courage,” she said, addressing the crowd. “Just as the passengers and crew of Flight 93 were as well.”

National President Thomas Costley said, like the Buffalo Soldiers, the passengers and crew of Flight 93 fought a battle.

“But unlike the Buffalo Soldiers, the 33 passengers and seven crew members did not have a .45-caliber strapped to their hip or a rifle on their horse,” he said. “They had to come up with an idea and a strategy in a matter of moments. This is a battle field indeed. There was a battle before their death. They did all they could to save other Americans. We have to recognize these heroes as much as we recognize any hero we read about in history books.”

Thomas encouraged people to learn more about the Buffalo Soldiers, a group of former slaves, freeman and black Civil War soldiers who served America during peacetime.

“We love our country,” he told the crowd. “That’s why we are here.”

The group also gave the park service $500 for the construction of the Flight 93 National Memorial.

“This will help us to build the memorial,” Black said while accepting the check.

After the ceremony, the visitors took time to take photographs and tour the temporary memorial.

William Shields, who was part of the wreath ceremony, said he was moved by his first visit to the site. He plans on visiting again once the memorial is built.

“This is hallowed ground,” he said. “Shanksville is such a mystical place.”

Sam Pearson of northern Virginia described his first visit to the site as touching and beautiful.

“You can’t really put it into words,” he said. “All I can do is just pray. And say thank you. There were a lot of brave warriors on that flight.”

Part of the run was used to raise money for breast cancer research. Jan Emanuel, a breast cancer survivor from New Jersey, founded the Dare to be a Diva motorcycle run. She said Buffalo Soldier groups in different states help with the ride. She said they meet at Harley Davidson dealerships. In its first two years, they donated $75,000 to cancer research.

“We’re at the halfway point this year and have already raised $23,000,” she said.

Thomas said the motorcycle club is made up of active and retired military personnel, troopers and other law enforcement officers, and white- and blue-collar workers.

“It’s a lot of good people,” he said.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department provided an escort from Seven Springs to the site with the help of local law enforcement.

“It was great,” Thomas said. “Their cooperation with us was incredible.”

Sheriff John Mankey said everything went smoothly.

“There wasn’t anything close to an incident,” he said. “Everyone was cooperative. They were a nice group of people, very safe, very nice. We thank everyone involved and everyone who chipped in to make it work.”

The noise of heavy traffic on Revere Beach Parkway in Everett suddenly gave way to the rumble and roar of dozens of motorcycles. Five women rode their bikes into the Boston Harley-Davidson parking lot, surrounded by a group of bikers clad in black and yellow jackets with “BUFFALO SOLDIERS” emblazoned on the backs. The lot quickly filled with leather, chains and attitude.

Onlookers might have thought the whole scene rolled straight out of “Easy Rider” if it weren’t for one thing: Instead of chasing the bikers, Boston and Everett police escorted them.

Flanked by boys in blue and men in black, the five “Divas for a Cure” made a stop in Greater Boston last Friday. The parking lot visit was part of a 6,300-mile road trip to promote their cause — finding a cure for breast cancer.

“We are simply ordinary women trying to do extraordinary things to impact the lives of women in our community,” says Jan Emanuel-Costley, “and change the image of women in motorcycling.”

Emanuel-Costley, a.k.a. “Sunny The Diva,” is the founder and president of Divas for a Cure. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to promoting early detection, education and screenings, as well as supporting continued research. The motorcycle run is the organization’s key fundraiser.

This year’s third annual trip started when the divas departed from Atlanta on July 16, hitting the road toward North Carolina. The trip took them to Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan, with a stop in Canada, before arriving in Massachusetts. Following their Everett stop, the riders set out for New Jersey and to the National Bikers Roundup in Greensburg, Pa. They are scheduled to return to Atlanta on Aug. 4.

Throughout the motorcycle run, the divas stop at Harley Davidson dealerships to host events where people can make donations or register to ride with the group to the next city. At the events, Emanuel-Costley says, the women raise cancer awareness by advising participants to get regular screenings, sharing their personal experiences with the illness and asking for contributions for breast cancer research.

Emanuel-Costley also matches women diagnosed with breast cancer to volunteers who have gone through the battle to bring these women emotional support.

“Our mission is simple,” says Emanuel-Costley. “Breast cancer awareness and early detection are key to survival. I am living proof.”

Now in her 25th year as a cancer survivor, Emanuel-Costley first had a brain tumor at 16. Then, at 22, she found a lump on one of her breasts and says she had to convince the doctors that it could be malignant. Three months later, she had it extracted.

“They kept saying, ‘It’s probably nothing,’” she remembers. “Had I not insisted, I probably wouldn’t be here today.”

Years later, in 1998, Emanuel-Costley was again haunted by cancer. This time, the victim was her aunt, Mary Elizabeth Clemons, who helped raise her. Before Clemons’ death two years later, Emanuel-Costley promised her she would give back to the community. One day in 2005, when someone dared her to go on a cross-country ride, she decided to found Divas for a Cure.

In the ride’s first year, the divas traveled from San Francisco to Florida, up to New York, and back. They raised $25,000. Last year, they went from Los Angeles to Maryland and back, raising $50,000. Each time, the group donated the money to breast cancer research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

As they reached Massachusetts last Friday, the divas had already raised $44,000. They said they expect to raise around $100,000 this year.

The rewards, they noted, are not only financial.

“This journey has been a treasure of knowledge and growth,” says diva Cynthia Marcy, a.k.a. “Chicago,” a retired former employee of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “People embrace us everywhere we go.”

“It’s been a blast,” adds rider Michelle Hampton, who runs a travel agency and a truck company in Atlanta, Ga.

Emanuel-Costley, Marcy and Hampton, as well as divas Aj Coffee (“Suga Soldier”) and Elaine Thomas (“Hunter”) are enjoying the trip so much that they say they are already committed to rolling together again next year.

“In the motorcycle community, sometimes we are not as proactive about our health because we are living on the edge,” says Emanuel-Costley. “But the earlier the stage, the better your chances. Ninety-five percent of all breast cancer … is curable.”

It was an early morning rise with a 5am departure from Niagara Falls. Fifteen miles down the road our pickup rider realized she left her passport in her hotel room, so she and Chase returned to retrieve it while the core group headed toward customs to reenter the US. The caught up as we headed to Boston, meeting up with our Buffalo Soldier escorts at a rest stop just outside the city. As we reached city limits, the escort was taken over by the State Police who provided a siren/lights escort through rush-hour traffic. As we crossed the bridge with traffic stopped on each side of our group, it brought a stream of tears each of the divas to experience such a show of support and solidarity.

We left Detroit without our Road Captain due to mechanical needs for his trailer. The Michigan Buffalo Soldiers escorted the Divas into Canada, greeted at the border by the Ontario Buffalo Soldiers immediately followed by our first international media coverage. Television and newspapers reporters interviewed us as we arrived at the Thunder Roads H/D in Ontario. Our second stop was Ricky's H/D in London, where they have a WEEKLY Thursday evening ride for Breast Cancer! Rain showers welcomed us as we arrived in Niagara Falls. Our Road Captain joined us by dinnertime, and we all retired to rooms (with hot tubs) early for a much needed rest.

Escorted out of Milwaukee by Misty, we met with two Chicago Buffalo Troopers. An Indiana State Patrolman escorted our group to the Illinois State line. This was dubbed the "day of delays", with an escort's Gold Wing experiencing mechanical difficulties, followed by problems with TC's trailer. In order to make it to the H/D dealership in Detroit for the meet & greet, the Divas left the road captain and chase vehicle, and were escorted to Detroit. All was well once we pulled into the parking lot greeted by nearly 50 Buffalo Soldiers, other supports and a live radio remote with Reggie Reg. To top off a crazy day, our hotel accommodations at the Southfield Marriott were AMAZING (as was the lovely fruit basket, THANKS Heather and Ann!).

A dark 4 am kickstands up departure during a rain storm... we had to have this experience to prove we are TRUE Divas, right? But we would have to say that Chicago got her official stripes as a Diva, as she held in there, gaining confidence with each mile and each raindrop. As we arrived at the new Harley Davidson Museum, we were greeted by huge smiles from Lynn Bonner and H/D staff. With a lunch spread awaiting the core group and our escorts, we were toured through the museum. A surprise and historic presentation to Divas For A Cure and another to the Buffalo Soldiers was the highlight of the day. A meet and greet at the House of Harley was followed by dinner with the Milwaukee Buffalo Solders.

Received numerous phone calls from the homefront. Les had to reach out to the Extreme poker crew, and I to Mom and the 100+lb puppy. "Ruby is her name and she's 9 or 10 yrs old but she's a puppy at heart. Anywho...we made it to Clayton county HD on time and in style.

The entire day...as HOT as it was, was an event to remember....Hectic... but a good day nonetheless. I even met up with "Hurricane" from Alabama again.

Chase and I won the waterballoon toss on the Fatboy, with Chase sitting on the luggage rack! Picture that if you will. hee hee Chase also won the 50/50. and filled all the Divas gas tanks.

Yep I think I'll keep him.

Dinner at Big Daddy's. It was PACKED with Divas, Soldiers and "GASLIGHT" received his centerman after the dinner was underway. He was a happy man. Yes he left the restaurant to get his centerman sewn on. Back to the room to pack and sleep. We have to hit the road, err kickstands up at 0600 hours.

The local fire department was on the grill cooking up tasty burgers and hot-dogs with lots of sweet tea and lemonade. It was a wonderful day with an amazing group of people. Well, the Divas For A Cure are a group of outstanding performers in their own right. These Divas are preparing for their third year of riding across the country on motorcycles to raise funds for breast cancer research. Divas For A Cure (DFAC) is a service-based nonprofit organization dedicated to raising cancer awareness through early detection, education, screenings and supporting research for eradicating cancer.

“This year the Divas For A Cure Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run will take place from mid July to early August and will involve travel that will take the core group of riders from Atlanta to Canada, Canada to the East Coast, and then wind back to Atlanta. Organizers selected M. D. Anderson to receive the funds after working very closely with Vickie Shannon, M.D. Anderson professor of Pulmonary Medicine. Shannon was asked by organizers to be their sponsor at M. D. Anderson.

She had not met the fundraising Divas until they arrived at M. D. Anderson last year with their second donation.

“I walked outside here on a Saturday and there was this group of beautiful African-American people wearing black leather,” said Shannon, “This was very different than what M. D Anderson was used to.”

Shannon added that she expected to see donors in three piece suits and stockings. Divas For A Cure changed that stereotype for Shannon. “It just goes to show you that donations come in from all walks of life and from all different kinds of people,” she said, “Sometimes, they come in riding on motorcycles.”

Emanuel-Costley started the nonprofit through encouragement from her boss. Emanuel-Costley went through a personal experience of successfully surviving two tumors in her head and one in her chest. Forming this grassroots organization was a way to channel some of her anger associated with that experience as well as to heal from the loss of her Aunt Mary who died in 2000 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. DFAC strives to reach and educate all communities about breast cancer, she said.

“We try to make sure we are reaching out to all communities, especially the African American and Hispanic communities,” said Emanuel-Costley.

These communities, who actually have the highest incidence rate for breast cancer, she added, tend to be less informed about the disease than white women. “I have met a lot of women at church and other places who have had breast cancer but don’t talk about it,” she said, “I have had so many women come identify with us because we look like them.”

This year’s ride will kick off on July 19 in Atlanta, and it will take 18 days to complete the 5,010-mile journey. The riders will spend about 14 of those days on the ground, will average about 300 to 500 miles a day and will be in the saddle for approximately eight hours a day, said Emanuel-Costley. During the motorcycle run the Divas are scheduled to take part in the Annual National Bikers Roundup held this year in Pennsylvania.

The core group of riders is made up of three Divas who will be accompanied by road captains from the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers Motorcycle Club. Members of local Buffalo Soldier chapters will escort the riders in and out of their major stopping points. Group and pick-up riders can meet and ride along with the DFAC core riders at any point in the route for a $35 registration fee. As a New Jersey high school student in 1976, Elaine Thomas terrified her father when she bought her first motorcycle, a Kawasaki, from a neighbor.

Since then, Thomas, now a Nazareth resident retired from the Department of Corrections, has always owned a two-wheel steel horse. Her current ride is a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy.

Thomas is one of the Divas For A Cure, four women leading a volunteer nonprofit effort to raise both public awareness on breast cancer and funding for research to find a cure. Like Thomas, the other three Divas are motorcyclists.

This will be her first year taking part in the Divas' annual Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run, a 6,000-mile round-trip ride, starting July 19, from Morrow, Ga., to Ontario, Canada, and back again.

The Divas stop at various Harley-Davidson dealerships and other locations along their route, distributing literature and information about breast cancer, warning signs and the importance of getting breast exams early. They also invite other motorcyclists to ride with them in support of the cause for however far the others want to ride.

"I'm so excited about this ride I can't think straight," said Thomas. "It's a chance to do something I enjoy doing for a purpose and to honor the memories of those I've lost (aunt and grandmother) to breast cancer."

Thomas, whose Diva nickname is "Hunter," joined the organization after meeting Divas founder Jan "Sunny" Emanuel-Costley in Maryland during an interstate road trip with friends. Soon after, she met fellow Divas A.J. "Suga Soldier" Coffee and Cynthia "Chicago" Marcy.

Each Diva has her own fundraising page on the Web sites, www.divasforacure.org and www.realdivasride.com, which direct visitors on pledging tax-deductible donations.

"We have sort of a (friendly) competition going between the four of us to see who can raise the most," Thomas said, smiling.

Last year's effort raised a total of $50,000, which went to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. The Divas aim to top that amount this year.

The Divas will make two stops on the way down to Morrow, Ga., from where the annual benefit round-trip ride starts July 19. The first will be July 12 from noon to 4 p.m. at Barb's Harley-Davidson in West Collingswood Heights, N.J., and the next will be July 16 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.

Thomas also is a probationary member of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club's Pocono Mountains chapter.

The club, which has chapters in communities across the country, honors the memory of the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-African-American military unit formed by the federal government after the Civil War and credited with helping civilize the western frontier. The club serves as a social network, with its chapters involved in community volunteer work and fundraisers to support various causes.

Buffalo Soldiers club chapters will escort the Divas and any other motorcyclists riding with them as they pass from state to state.

"We pay all trip-related expenses for ourselves, including nightly hotel stays, out of our own pockets," Thomas said. "That's a total of more than 20 hotel stays for the entire trip. We make anyone else who rides along with us aware that they will have to pay their own way."

As they do every year, the Divas will have a driver following them, towing a trailer equipped for emergencies such as breakdowns or accidents. This year, the driver will be Thomas' husband, Les Thomas, who also is a motorcyclist.

"I feel so enthusiastic about this trip," Elaine Thomas said. "I just look forward to the camaraderie of people riding together and doing it for a cause."

The FINANCIAL -- Harley-Davidson Motor Company is proud to announce its participation in the third annual Divas For A Cure (DFAC) Annual Cross-Country Breast Cancer Motorcycle Run.

Hundreds of motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts will make their way to Atlanta, Ga., to kick off the event on July 19. The annual motorcycle run is organized by DFAC, a service-based nonprofit organization dedicated to raising cancer awareness through early detection, education, screenings and supporting research for eradicating cancer. Last year DFAC raised $50,000 for breast cancer research. The organization is looking forward to reaching a target of $100,000 from this year’s ride. The DFAC motorcycle run is scheduled to take place from July 16 to Aug. 6 with donations presented to the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center - Nellie B. Connally Breast Center.

Along with Harley-Davidson attendees, the ride features the “Divas” including Founder and President of the organization Jan Emanuel-Costley, Vice-President Aj Coffee, Cynthia Marcy and Elaine Thomas. Road captains will accompany the “Divas” from the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers Motorcycle Club. The DFAC run will include “Meet and greet” events at various participating Harley-Davidson dealerships along the route where people will have the opportunity to make donations or register to ride. The “Divas” are also scheduled to participate in a VIP tour of the Harley-Davidson Museum on July 22 guided by Curatorial Director, Jim Fricke. “We are very excited to have Jan Emanuel-Costley and her supporters tour our exciting new museum. It was a wonderful feeling to roll into Oakland and be greeted by the Clorox Corporation and Pine-Sol, along with family and friends. Pine-Sol presented us with a check for $10,000.00, and a full-page feature in the October edition of Essence Magazine. Pine-Sol has also agreed to donate 21 mammograms to an organization of our choice right here in our community!

We arrived at approximately 6:00 PM and didn't have time to stop to clean off the road-dirt, freshen-up or change clothes. We are sun burnt, sore and exhausted but happy. I officially road from Oakland to Maryland and back to Oakland making numerous fundraising stops along the way and logging in 6969 miles.

No and I'm not quite finished. Aj Jemison currently lives in Los Angeles road back with me to Oakland for the Pine-Sol presentation and I will ride with her half-way back to Los Angeles on August 12, 2007. I don't think I will ride much for a few weeks. My butt need a break!

We all rose early, well aware that our 2007 adventure was coming to a close. Aj drove our escort 90 miles back to Victorville to retrieve his motorcycle, and Miss Vickie departed Los Angeles ahead of the group to arrive to Oakland in time for a celebration hosted by her husband. The remaining Divas (Aj Jemison, Claudia Lile and Jan Emanuel) departed Los Angeles before noon, separating approximately 60 miles outside of Oakland to make the two events (Clorox Corporation and Gloria's
Leathers) being held in Oakland. The end of a journey that has changed the lives of all of us had finally arrived! Later in the evening Jan and Aj joined Claudia at Miss Vickie's home to wish Vickie a Happy Birthday and reminisce over the previous three weeks.

Although the crowd was small, we had a great time, concluding the evening with some line dancing in the parking lot of the shopping center.

Share I never thought I'd be writing this. ... I have breast cancer.

It all started a few weeks ago. We had gotten the news that our dear colleague and friend Joel Siegel had passed away and we began preparing for our special tribute show for him. I did a piece about Joel's courageous battle with cancer, reporting on the way my friend had lived his life and been such a successful advocate for the importance of early cancer screenings.

That very night when I went to bed, I did a self breast exam and found something that women everywhere fear: I found a lump.

At first I thought, "This can't be. I am a young, healthy woman." Nevertheless, I faced my fear head on and made an appointment to see the doctor. Much as I was hoping the doctor would say it was nothing, she did a biopsy and confirmed that the lump I'd found was indeed an early form of breast cancer.

Hearing the doctor say those words out loud was surreal.

I will be having surgery shortly and follow-up treatment in the months to come. So in the coming months, you will probably notice that I will have my good days and my bad days, but I know I will get through it with the love and support of my family and friends. Diane, Sam, Chris and all of the folks behind the scenes who make this program come to life each and every morning have been so supportive and loving at this challenging time.

To you, our viewers, please know that your thoughts and prayers very much sustain me as they always have each and every morning when I sit in the chair next to Diane and say "Good Morning America." You have always been there for me … and I love you back.

And like my good friend Joel, I can't stress enough how important it is to get screened and checked for all cancers — and to do self breast exams. I am so blessed that I found this in the early stages and the prognosis is so promising that my doctor expects me to be flying planes and hanging on to submarines in the middle of the Atlantic and scaling the Mayan Pyramids in no time in the mornings to come.

Now I join the ranks of millions of Americans who are fighting this same battle each and every day. I appreciate YOUR courage and YOUR example. Thank you for showing me the way.

Felipe, President of BSMC-MD and Ghostrider met us for kickstands up at 8:15 to escort us to Ohio.

It was an overcast day when we departed hotel, then the clouds opened and the rain began to fall. Of the 500 mile journey, we spent at least 250 in wet weather. But our rain suits could not prepare us for the hail that clobbered us as we passed through the mountain of Maryland. It felt like walnut size rocks being thrown, and for those riding without a face shield, there we left over marks on their lips and nose! We sought shelter and found it after reducing our speed to about 15 miles per hours, continuing to roll to the next exit. Visibility was limited to the lights on the bike directly in front of us, despite the fact it was 11 in the morning. The worst of the weather conditions passed within 20 minutes, and we mounted up and headed on our way, with rain constant for several more miles off and on until we reached Ohio. But we made it!!!

Finally checking in before 7:30pm, we were all looking forward to a good night sleep and a 6:30am kickstand up for the next morning.

Joining the other Soldiers and two members of the Road Divas, we were led through Virginia to Southern Maryland by Freckles, member of the BSMC Chapter, meeting up with more Road Divas as we entered Maryland. Lucki, one of the Road Divas experienced a problem with her bike on the expressway, but we all pulled over and waited until she was back on the road.

The DFAC core group Divas were loaned the white vests of Road Diva members to roll up to the picnic area at Hillantrae Park in full regalia. With at least 100 family and friends waiting and cheering, we were warmly and emotionally welcomed by the officers and members of the Road Divas of Distinction Motorcycle Associateon of MD/VA/DC stylishly dressed in black and white.

The sisterhood was geniune and tearful, including support by the Karamel Divas and the Chocolate City Divas. Brother M/C clubs that came out to show their support included the Band of Brothers M/C of MD and DC, Second II None of Landover, MD, Down N Dirty, World Wide Rydaz, and the Buffalo Soldiers MC of Maryland, Rhode Island, Oklahoma and So. Maryland. Sista Soulja (Road Divas) gave a moving rendition of "I Won't Complain", accompanied by Rhode Runner (Pres. BSMC Rhode Island) before departing to return to Atlanta on her trike. Mia, a very special person in Sunny's life that helped her during her first recovery drove hours with her husband and young son to be with her as she arrived for the picnic. It was a beautiful day filled with love, laughter and fellowship.

We meet up with Sista Soulja and Professor Wash from the Road Divas of Distinction Motorcyle Club. We were so exhausted from the ride, heat and long days that we went to bed early, so as to prepare for a long ride the next day. The Roanoke Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club met up with us on the way to provide escort into their city.

We were surprised to find three local televisions stations were waiting to interview us at the Harley-Davidson Dealership. The Meet & Greet was coordinated by one of our Lady Soldiers "Dot" who is also a member of the Lady's of Harley, HOG Riders Association and the Roanoke Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. A check for $2,000 was presented by Travelin Man, President of the Roanoke Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club.

After the check presentation, introductions and open discussion - we were hosted in the homes of the BSMC Members for a descent night sleep and to do laundry.

If you haven't been to Bike Night on Beale Street in Memphis - you are in for a real treat. Lots of people mingling, hanging out, listening to live music and checking out the custom motorcycles.

We setup the DFAC trailer on Beale Street directly across from the podium, where we were able to meet and chat with 100's of folks and bikers about our cross-country adventure. We sold our DFAC merchandise and even had an opportunity to meet several breast cancer survivors who came down after hearing about us from the motorcycle community and local media.

As luck would have it - - before departing from Memphis headed for Knoxville, we were also interviewed live on TV at the Peabody Place Mall.

We were beginning to settle into the ride and get comfortable with the long days. The weather was

hot and humid, nonetheless the ride was wonderful. We arrived in Oklahoma City and was greeted by Warrior, Vice President of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. As we rolled into the gas station a CBS camera man recorded footage and a brief interview to forward to Tulsa to air that evening.

We stopped by the Buffalo Soldiers Oklahoma City Club House were we grabbed a bite to eat, quickly changed clothes and then rushed off to the Meet & Greet at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa, OK. On the way to the event we got caught in a brief down-pour and was drenched but fortunately our PrivacyWear is wash and wear, so we were almost dry upon arrival.

There were several hundred people in attendance at the Tulsa event including State Senator Judy Eason-McIntyre (a breast cancer survivor) who presented a proclamation on behalf of the Mayor's Office and the State Senate. We were interviewed by two local networks. See Below...

The mistress of ceremony was Alberta Jones (a breast cancer survivor) and hosted by Martha Vaughan (KJMZ Radio) and sponsored by PrivacyWear. There was a fashion show and health fair along with food, fun and family.

Travel from Flagstaff, Arizona to Santa Rosa, New Mexico

Today was a good day. We made great time as we traveled from Flagstaff toSanta Rosa, NM.We are still traveling down famous Route 66 - the Desert, the mountains andthe sky give birth to a new meaning of "Freedom."

There is so much to see when riding on a motorcycle that you would otherwisemiss in a car and a lot of time to think!You should see the faces of some of the men when we roll by them on ourmotorcycles. Women also give us a "Big Thumbs Up," which is a wonderfulgesture, especially once they realize why we are on this journey. We get somuch love on the road from everyone for 5 to 85!

There was light rain practically the entire day but we made great progressand pounded our way through Arizona to safely arrive in Santa Rosa, NM
